How can the media declare a winner before the polls close on the other side of the country?

It make me so mad when a TV station delares that not all the poles are closed yet. Then turn around and anounce that so in so is being declared a winner. Wouldn't that taint the remaining poles. And they wonder why people don't want bother to vote!
